As Managing Director of Thothaal Group, Majid Ismail Chaudhry is another man to have played a key role in Costcutter’s success in the UK. He now takes on the challenge of helping to establish the new Costcutter Morocco franchise.
Majid opened his first store in the London region in 1991, but the venture did not come without significant financial risk. It necessitated seventeen-hour working days, not to mention plenty of assistance from friends, family and associates. The results made the investment well worthwhile, however, placing Majid in a position to continue opening new convenience stores every three or four years.
His fourth store opening – in Hackney – came in 2007, at which point he took on a larger project in Newham that involved the conversion of a derelict site into a combined supermarket and residential premises. By 2009, Majid had launched his sixth store and, to this day, continues to run the Thothaal Group with distinction, supervising operational delivery and maintaining stores around the North East London region that are accessible to their customers, in addition to recruiting from the local community.
Majid has also branched out into philanthropy, co-founding the PTS Foundation after witnessing the plight of child labour in the developing world. Among other work, the charity provides clean drinking water and shelter in a village in Pakistan. Majid has also been involved in Islamic Relief, the leading international aid and development charity, as well as the UK Government’s Change4life healthy eating campaign that has seen the introduction of a wider range of fruit and vegetables in participating Costcutter stores.
Majid has also served as director at various other companies, including – since 2005 – Kashmir Trading PLC, Kashmir International PLC and Ferryton Builders PLC, as well as – since 2007 – Lethamyard PLC. He was appointed to his present position at Thothaal Group in April 2005. Majid also has a keen interest in politics, and is very active in the Kashmiri community. He is also on the management team at UK Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, serving as a Co-Opted Director.
With his active contributions to Costcutter’s business ethic, along with a clear determination to innovate the retail business model, Majid has certainly established a strong track record of growing retail stores, and hopes to replicate this success in his new role at Costcutter Morocco.
